More important terms

An Art Form: is the specific shape, or quality an artistic expression takes. The medium often influences the form. It combines both formal qualities of the form and artistic intentions.

One example in sculpture is the three dimension.
Another example for painting is the brush and canvas texture, color.

Genre: set of conventions and styles within a particular medium.

One example is in paintings includes pastoral landscapes and still life.

Style: An artwork, artist's, and movement's style is the distinctive method and form that art take's. Can be linked with a particular historical period, set of ideas, and particular artistic movement.

Functions of Art

There are two different types of functions of art: Non-Motivated and Motivated

Non-Motivated:
  1. Basic human insticts- Harmony, Balance, Rhythm --Achieving beauty
  2. Experience of the Mysterious -- Relation to the universe
  3. Expression of the Imagination-- Symbols, ideas, and a range of forms that are maleable
  4. Universal Communication -- Between the individual and the universe
  5. Ritualistic and Symbolic Functions
Motivated:
  1. Communication
  2. Art as entertainment
  3. Avante-garde. Art for political change
  4. Art for psychological and healing purposes-- art therapy
  5. Art for social inquiry, subversion, and/or anarchy-- critize part of society

Defining Art and Architecture

What is art???

Is a sandcastle, a chalk drawing on the driveway, a grocery list, the doddles on the side of a student's page, a finger painting, an oil painting, a model made out of clay art?? Are any, some, or all the above art??

Definition of art:

Products of human creativity
Creation of beautiful or significant things
Visual representations
Creations, expressions that appeal or are attractive to the senses or have some significance to the mind of an individual
Beauty
Conceived image in a given medium
Human endeavor and have meaning beyond simple description


Definition of architecture:


Design and construction and ornamentation of fine buildings
Esthetic effects
Designing buildings and environments
An art and a science of designing buildings and other structures
